In Memoriam: Emeritus faculty member Stanley Dodson
The Zoology department is very saddened to communicate news that Professor Emeritus Stanley Dodson passed away Sunday, August 23, 2009 - after a tragic bicycle accident in Colorado. Many of us remember Stanley's lively presence on campus and his passion for zooplankton, ecology, and teaching.
Stanley retired earlier this year, after being at the University of Wisconsin - Madison from 1970 - 2009. He was a freshwater ecologist, focusing on community ecology of zooplankton and population ecology of Daphnia. Stanley taught courses in general ecology, plankton ecology, summer limnology, and supervised an ecology internship and service learning program. Stanley was the Chair of the Biological Aspects of Conservation (BAC) Program (an undergraduate major program with about 100 majors), and a member of the Limnology and Marine Science Program. He was on the editorial board of the journal Hydrobiologia.
Stanley's last seminar in the department was entitled "Widening Ripples", his way of nudging us all to think about the ripples that radiate away from our own lives to others and the world around us. The "ripples" of Stanley's life have left a lasting legacy. He will be sorely missed.
I am sure that Ginny and the Dodson family would deeply appreciate your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
Memorial Services will be held in Wisconsin Friday, September 4th at 11:00 a.m. at the McFarland Lutheran Church in McFarland, WI. Lunch will follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers the Dodson family asks that memorial donation in the memory of Stanley Dodson be sent to Rocky Mountain Biological Center (RMBL), PO Box 519, Crested Butte, CO 81224 or the University of Wisconsin Arboretum.
