Research Interests:
Ed studies the factors that govern the structure of lake communities
in northern Wisconsin. In particular, he has shown that the
composition of the fish community is strongly influenced by lake
development and access to fisherman. Slthough human modification
of the lake shoreline may increase the local diversity and abundance
of fish (e.g. by increasing the complexity of habitat structure
around docks, etc.), this local increase is confined to very small
scales, and the favored fish are "weedy" species of generalists.
At the scale of whole lakes, human impact is to greatly reduce fish
diversity, particularly removing native specialists.
