Patricia B. McConnell, Ph.D. is an Adjunct Associate Professor, teaching “The Biology and Philosophy of Human-Animal Relationships,” (Zoology/Wildlife Ecology 335). The curriculum includes topics related to evolution, domestication, comparative cognition, ethology, ecology, and the physiology of stress as well as historical and current philosophical thought regarding our duties toward animals. It is designed to provide students with the information and critical skills necessary to evaluate current environmental, social and personal issues related to human-animal relationships from both biological and philosophical perspectives.

McConnell is also a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist, whose primary work is writing and speaking about feline and canine behavior. She founded and ran Dog’s Best Friend, Ltd. a dog training and behavior consulting business for twenty years, and sold it in 2007 to Aimee Moore, the training director of the business for many years.  Currently McConnell spends her time writing books on behavior and training, and speaking around the world about applied ethology. She is the author of “The Other End of the Leash,” which uses an evolutionary perspective to understand (and improve) our behavior around dogs, and “For the Love of a Dog: Understanding Emotions in You and Your Best Friend.” To date, The Other End of the Leash has been published in ten other countries, and For the Love of a Dog won the 2007 Audie for best audio book in its category. McConnell is also the co-host of “Calling All Pets,” from Wisconsin Public Radio, and gives advice to animal lovers in over 110 cities around the country. You can learn more about her on her website at www.patriciamcconnell.com, or her blog at www.theotherendoftheleash.com.
