Patricia B. McConnell, Ph.D. is an Adjunct Associate Professor, teaching “The Biology and Philosophy of Human-Animal Relationships,” (Zoology/Wildlife Ecology 335). The curriculum includes topics related to evolution, domestication, comparative cognition, ethology, ecology, the physiology of stress as well as historical and current philosophical thought regarding our duties toward animals. It is designed to provide students with the information and critical skills necessary to evaluate current environmental, social and personal issues related to human-animal relationships from both biological and philosophical perspectives.

McConnell is also a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist, whose primary work is the evaluation and treatment of serious behavioral problems in domestic dogs. Besides seeing clients at her business in Black Earth (Dog’s Best Friend, Ltd.) she oversees science-based dog training classes in four locations, publishes books and videos on training and treating behavior problems, and speaks around the world on the applied ethology of dogs and cats. She is the author of “The Other End of the Leash,” which uses an evolutionary perspective to understand (and improve!) our behavior around dogs. To date it has been published in seven other countries. McConnell is the co-host of “Calling All Pets,” from Wisconsin Public Radio, and gives advice to animal lovers in over 120 cities around the country.
