Research Interests. Beaver impoundments as flow discontinuities of stream networks

I will be examining beaver ponds in Colorado and comparing streams that flow into and out of these ponds to reference stream reaches.  Presence of ponds can change groundwater flow into the upstream reach as a result of the beaver-induced elevated water table and therefore could be impacting the upstream reach as well as reaches below the dam as many have already reported.  I will be using benthic invertebrates and emerging invertebrates to study invertebrate food web changes (functional feeding group changes) and invertebrate phenology changes in the upstream and downstream reaches in comparison to the reference sites.  Other parameters I will be evaluating are nutrient limitation, BOM, water table height and water temperature to determine if there is an upstream effect from the beaver modifications and if so, what the major driver of that effect might be.
