Areas
of study within/related to the field of zoology
Many of these areas are actively pursued on this campus, as courses or through
research projects, and are readily available to you for exploration.
Specialized Area: the study of
Anatomy - structure of the body; position,
and interrelation of its various parts
Aquatic Biology - aquatic organisms
Biotechnology - use of living cells
and cell-produced materials to create pharmaceutical, diagnostic, and other
products
can involve the altering of genetic information in animals and plants
Conservation
biology - effects of humans on the environment and with the
conservation of biological diversity
Ecology - the relationship of organisms to their environment
Endocrinology - glands and hormones of the body and their related processes
and functions
Embryology/Developmental biology - the
formation and development of organisms
Ethology - animal behavior, especially
as it occurs in a natural environment
Entomology -
insects
Evolution - Change in the genetic composition of a population during
successive generations
Genetics - heredity, especially the mechanisms
of hereditary transmission and the variation of inherited characteristics
among similar or related organisms
Ichthyology - fish
Immunology - structure and function of the immune
system
Invertebrates - organisms without backbones
Herpetology - amphibians and
reptiles
Histology - the anatomy and function of
cells and tissues
Limnology - organisms
living in and the phenomena of fresh water, especially lakes and ponds
Molecular Biology - the physiochemical
properties of molecules in a cell
Microbiology -
organisms that are too small to be seen with the unaided eye
Neurobiology - anatomy and physiology
of the nervous system
Ornithology - birds
Paleobiology - fossil life forms, esp.
with reference to their origin, structure, evolution, etc.
Parasitology - parasites
Phylogeny - evolutionary history
Physiology - body functions in animals
Primatology - primates
Systematics - the classification of living
organisms
Taxonomy - naming and classifying
animals (and plants)
