Careers

There's a lot out there to sink your teeth into.  Check with your advisor, or come into the Zoology Department office in Noland Hall if you would like more information.  There are many more sites that the Zoo Office can provide to help you narrow down your ideas.  To get you started thinking from the privacy of your computer though, here are a few links:

Getting Started

Colorado State University's Career Information
This website is excellent for general career information.  It includes resume tips, interviewing tips, and access

Careers in Ecology
This website is the ecology undergraduates' holy grail.  If you have no idea what to do or where to go next, here you are! This site explains the field, provides an opportunities list, and gives helpful advice.  Before going elsewhere, give this site a shot.

University of Wisconsin Zoology Career Site
Going back to our roots, here is the Undergraduate Index from the Zoo department's home page.

Internships

Student Conservation Association
This is the Students Conservation Association website. This government organization accepts applications and posts openings for student internships and LTE positions in the biology/ecology field.

Volunteer Opportunity Sites  (click here for more)

Arboretum
Check also with our local Arboretum.  It was designed for research, and has been the hotbed of prairie restoration in Madison.

Madison Vilas Zoo
The Vilas Zoo is a great place to volunteer or to do undergraduate research.

Peace Corps or National and Community Service (i.e. AmeriCorps) or Green Corps
These civillian service corps are the two biggest.   You should definately check out these sites.  This is intense, involved, and very awesome volunteer work for after you graduate.

Career Links

There are so many Career Links that I didn't want to list them all on one page.  Listed below are the divsions that most of them fall into.  The first two are career links that aren't as involved as the others. Take a Peek and see what they're about!

Museums, Aqauriums, and Zoos
Check out the local Madison Vilas Zoo or other Wisconsin Zoos, or check out the famous Shedd Aquarium and Field Museum in Chicago.  These are nearby and may spark some ideas for jobs within your degree.   If you're thinking of working at a zoo, you may need to relocate-  I hear Florida and Texas are excellent places for zoology majors to check out.

Fisheries Observers in Alaska
A unique job and an experience you'll always remember, Fisheries Observing for the limnologically minded is an opportunity to get some hands on experience identifying fish and living on the ocean.  It's hard work, but very rewarding.

University Biology Jobs
This is one of our university biology jobs websites.  It has a listing of all sorts of links to different jobs in biological and ecological sciences.

Zoology Government Job Listing Sites
Here are a few recommended government organizations.

Non Government Organizations
These include The Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, Environmental Decade, (among others), and are the most popular of the NGOs.

Cellular and Developmental Biology
These are the jobs that you do in the lab as well as in the field, and they include close study of the chemistry, physiology, genetics, cellular functions, and development of zoological organisms.
